Archdiocese of New Orleans Selects DeepNines iTrust toProtect Their 46,500 Students Online
DeepNines becomes online security choice for private schools; iTrust securing over 100 K-12 Archdiocese schools
SAN ANTONIO - NECC BOOTH 7246 - June 30, 2008 – DeepNines Technologies, the leader in integrated security solutions designed to actively control emerging Internet threats, today announced that their iTrust security platform was selected by another leading school district – the Archdiocese of New Orleans which provides network services and online access to over 46,000 students.
“When the Archdiocese came to us looking to enforce online acceptable use policies for their fourty-six thousand students, we knew we could solve their problem,” said Tom Knight, vice president of sales at DeepNines Technologies. “This is a great achievement for DeepNines and affirms our ability to deliver market-leading security that large school districts can depend on for online safety.”
The Archdiocese of New Orleans encompasses a total of 137 parishes over 100 Catholic elementary and high schools, educating more than 46,500 students. In 2007, two of its Catholic schools were recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and awarded the No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon School Award, one of the most prestigious education awards in the country.
The Archdiocese of New Orleans is at the forefront of the digital age and considers technology a critical asset to an enriched student curriculum. They recently launched an initiative in nine of their larger schools to provide a laptop to each student. With students having such readily available access to the Internet, the Archdiocese needed more rigorous control of online content and applications, with the assurance that their acceptable use policies were being followed.
“When giving students access to computers at school, we have a responsibility to provide a safe online environment,” said Justin Gibson, technology director at the Archdiocese of New Orleans. “We quickly sought the help of DeepNines when we were looking for a security product that would complement our existing network infrastructure and institute the granular control and network optimization we needed.”
The Archdiocese was impressed with DeepNines iTrust’s all-inclusive approach to protection which allowed them to prioritize Internet content and applications to their specifications, manage bandwidth across their more than 140 networks, gain complete network visibility and stay protected from viruses, worms and other malicious content.
Upon completion of the week long Internet Content Audit (ICA) from DeepNines, the Archdiocese quickly discovered that their existing content filtering solution was not blocking some of the online content deemed inappropriate. This was due primarily to the many different circumvention techniques students where using to get around their current content filter. The ICA report detailed how students were regularly accessing peer-to-peer (P2P) applications, social networking sites, online games, videos and a variety of other content and applications the Archdiocese had previously believed to be blocked. Additionally, this unwanted content was consuming critical network bandwidth and preventing access to legitimate good educational content and resources online.
“Selecting DeepNines was an easy choice for us,” said Robert Cochran, network administrator at Archdiocese of New Orleans. “They were the only vendor that offered us true end-to-end network security and online protection for our students, while other leading content filtering solutions were only able to deliver basic or known content protection.”
